November’s birthstone is a sunny yellow quartz believed to be closely related to Amethyst and thought to bring its wearer hope and strength. Some sources also say that Citrine causes increased feelings of joy and creativity, self-confidence, improved memory, and more energy in all that you do.  Citrine is from the French word “Citrin,” meaning lemon, as it ranges in color from palest yellow to Madeira, aptly named for the rich red wine.  Most citrine is mined in Brazil, although it may also come from Bolivia, Madagascar, the Ural mountains of Russia, and Dauphine, France.

Citrine has a long history, as it is believed that the very first people to wear it were the Romans, who used it in their jewelry. However, it did not become popular until the Romantic Period, when it was worn as a talisman against evil thoughts, bad skin, the plague, venomous reptiles and as a magical instrument.  Throughout history and continuing to present day, healing practitioners have used Citrine as a cleanser of toxins and to stimulate healing in general.

Citrine is thought to be amethyst exposed to molten rock, the high temperature of which changed it to yellow quartz. Darker citrine in shades of orange and red, has been exposed to heat to manipulate its color.  Citrine is very heat sensitive and will permanently change color if left in direct sunlight.
