Sew a Quilt Class

This class is ideal for those who have completed the basics and are interested in exploring the world of quilting. You will complete a “mini quilt” also known as a lap quilt or baby quilt.

You will learn how to make a “lap size” quilt top, prepare the backing and baste the layers together. You will also hand quilt it and learn to bind the edges.

This is a great way to learn key quilting techniques and have a sense of accomplishment.

Previous sewing experience or completion of one of our basics classes is required. We have machines available for you to use. If you need one, please let us know at the time of registration.

Materials Required:

  • fabric – i.e for a 3′ x 3′ (3′x3′ for backing, 1′ x 3′ for each of the 3 on the front)
  • batting (3′x3′)
  • thread
  • sewing kit (available for sale at Abeille)
  • rotary cutters (available for sale at Abeille)
  • cutting matt (1 available to share during class)

Beginning Sewing Intensive Class

In this 6-week course students will learn basic sewing skills and machine know-how. You will take on four fun projects: Project 1: Learn to use your sewing machine while making a sweet tote bag. In this 2 1/2 hour session students will learn to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and gain a basic understanding of how a sewing machine works. Project 2: Learn to read a pattern and make a ruffled half-apron. Project 3: In two 2 1/2 hour sessions, you will design and make a lap quilt. Project 4: In two 2 1/2 hour sessions, you will learn to make a fitted, darted skirt with a zipper (the male alternative is any pattern with darts and a zipper).

No experience is necessary. Plan to bring your own machine and fabric scissors. If you do not have a machine, we have a few in the store available for use, but please specify at the time of registration. Machines are available on a first come first serve basis, so please register early. Review the full list of supplies here.

Sewing I: 6 Week Workshop for Tweens and Teens

Sewing I: 6-Week Workshop for Kids and Teens

Learn the essentials of sewing. In this 6 week,  2 hour session workshop, you will learn how to hand sew, operate a sewing machine, select fabrics, sew a button and more.

Hand Sewing and Buttons – You will get get comfortable with fabrics and thread to create fashionable flower embellishments to use on T-shirts, bags, headbands or pins.  In this session we will thread a needle, follow simple patterns, cut fabric, hand sew and sew a button. It’s a great way to ease into the machine.

Get to know the machine – You will learn about the parts of the machine, how to wind a bobbin and thread the machine. We will practice stitches and pivoting. In this class, we will make beautifully sewn cards.

Make a Tote – focus on sewing straight lines to create a tote bag. You will follow a simple pattern for the exterior and interior of the tote.

Be Green and ReUse – use your new skills to up-cycle an existing pair of jeans and/or t-shirt. We will create ruffles, flowers and other embellishments to dress up a T-shirt or existing pair of jeans.

A material list is available upon registration. Scissors, pins, thread and material will be available for use during class. Additional materials can be purchased at Abeille. Please bring bottle water and a snack.

* If you own a machine, please bring it so you can become an expert on your own machine. We also have machines available for use. Please request one at the time of registration.

T-Shirt Embellishments

T-Shirt Embellishments Class

Discover fun ways to upcycle old shirts or add some flare to something new. We will learn to create embellishments such as ruffles, bows and flowers for your favorite T-shirts, sweater or simply to wear in your hair.

Please bring shirt or sweater to embellish, extra fabric, corresponding thread, any lace, tulle, buttons, fabric scraps for making flowers. Tulle, fabric scraps, buttons and t-shirt scraps will be available for purchase, as well.

Tools: Sewing machine and Scissors. We also have machines available to reserve and scissors to share.

Love to sew, but having trouble finishing a project or beginning a new one?  Bring your projects to our Open Sew Workshop.  The instructor will guide you through your latest project.  This will be a wonderful chance to deepen your sewing skills and learn from the projects of others!

Sewing Machine Basics: Youth One on Ones

Learn the basics of threading and using a sewing machine as well as explore your interests in sewing. We strongly believe that our customers under the age of 17 greatly benefit from private instruction. Please call us to coordinate.

For the first session, we recommend getting started with a small tote bags.

For headbands: Bring 1/2 yard of fabric and corresponding thread to make headbands with your new found skills.

We have machines available for you to use. Please let us know at the time of registration.

* For ages 11 and younger, we recommend 1 hour sessions and start with hand-sewing.
